The League of Extraordinary Foundry Virtual Tabletop Developers is proud to announce its third-anniversary package jam!

A Package Jam is an event where anyone can participate by creating a new module or system (called “packages”) for Foundry VTT. It is a great way to start Foundry development or try something new and different from your existing packages. At the end of the event, the players can vote for their favorite packages, and the winners even get a small prize.

Anyone interested in publishing a new Foundry VTT package is encouraged to participate. The primary goal of the package jam is to provide a fun and engaging environment for new developers to explore FVTT package development.

If you aren’t already there, please consider joining the League’s Discord server. There’s no other place like it if you’re interested in FVTT package development!

Submitting a package

There are a few condition in order for your package to be eligible:

It must be submitted between now and midnight on August 22nd (EST).

It needs to be approved by Foundry staff for the official package listing.

An open source license is required.

It must be compatible with FVTT v10.

You must include the following field in your manifest file:

"flags": {
    "fvttdevleague": {
        "package-jam": 2022
    }
}

Winning a category entitles you to one of our TBA prizes, including gift cards to The Forge!

Categories

Best Package

First Package

Useful

Polished

Mind-blowing

Wacky

Gorgeous

Massive

Educational

Integratable

Voting on Foundry Hub

This year we have a two-phase voting system.

First, a panel of volunteer judges will each nominate entries for consideration in each category. The top entries in each category will form the shortlist for that category!

Afterward, we’ll open the voting to anyone with a free Foundry Hub account. Each Foundry Hub member votes for up to three of the nominees in each category. The one with the most votes is the winner! Don’t forget the best overall package, which every package will be eligible for! If it’s your first time submitting a FVTT package, your package will automatically be nominated for the “first package” category.

Become a judge

If you aren’t able to participate by submitting a package, we will make a public call for volunteer judges in August, so make sure to join our Discord server and get the @league-announcements role to be notified for that. People entering into the Package jam are not eligible. Anyone who doesn’t complete their package in time for the jam may submit their interest as a judge instead.

Fine print: Official start time July 22, 2022 12:00 PM. Official end time August 22, 2022 12:00 PM. All submissions must be compatible with Foundry VTT V10, packages that the judges are unable to get running or test will be disqualified from nomination. Judge votes have equal weight. A developer can have a maximum of 2 packages nominated per category. If a category doesn’t get more than three nominees, that category will be removed. For the public voting phase, Foundry Hub user votes have equal weight and are not ranked. A user can cast a maximum of 3 votes. The package with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie for most votes, tied entries share the victory. The prize recipient will be decided according to a 1vs1 Fifth Edition Dungeons and Dragons Level 14 deathmatch adjudicated by an impartial dungeonmaster. No fudged rolls, all DM decisions final.

Blair: I’m a self-taught coder having started a little over 20 years ago. I was running a LAN party in Brisbane, Australia with a group of friends (the LAN still runs today, although not so regularly due to Covid restrictions) and we needed a website to be able to host information on when our next LAN was and what to bring (this is back where you didn’t have an internet connection at a LAN party, so you had to bring everything you needed with you). This was my entry into HTML and CSS along with PHP. Over time this eventually led into my overall career, with games being a hobby. I had been playing D&D in person with pen and paper for a few years but then Covid meant that we couldn’t meet up in person anymore, so had to look to online solutions. Eventually I made the switch to Foundry VTT and haven’t looked back. The level of customization and openness really appeals to me, especially with a programming background.

Blair: I GM D&D for a group each fortnight (when there’s enough of us available) in a fairly haphazard way due to the players’ constantly shifting availability. This means that we often stretch out one-shot style adventures and attempt to tie them together in a somewhat meaningful way – this is what lead me to creating the Scene Packer module. I was wanting to move my mini-adventures from my local dev machine onto my Foundry VTT instance to pull them into the world there. An “adventure module” was the way to do it, but my scene journal pins and actor tokens weren’t linked because the IDs changed. Thus, Scene Packer was born. I do get to play as a player every now and then but that’s far less often than when I’m GMing. I do enjoy building out a mini-adventure, trying out all of the various amazing modules that people create within the community and so it’s usually me who has yet-another-adventure ready to go. One of my players is willing to GM an Alien RPG campaign at some point and I am very keen to play that – I’ve been purposefully avoiding reading or looking at any of the content so as to not spoil any of it.

Blair: I can see the content ecosystem for Foundry VTT really exploding. With tools like my module generator and Scene Packer making it easier for non-developers to make modules, it’s just a matter of distribution. Currently to distribute your content you need to create a module that the end user installs and activates in their world. This is an easy step to do, but it’s still a required step. A lot of content creators currently release their content via Patreon, so I’m working with the developer of the Moulinette module to integrate Scene Packer. Moulinette is a way for end users to easily search, browse and follow their favorite Patreon creators and install content straight into their Foundry VTT world with no need to install custom modules for each adventure. I’m very excited about the amazing content that already gets built, let alone all of the amazing new content that will continue to be built for Foundry VTT.

Understanding Scene-Packer (A Layperson’s Guide)

To understand how scene packer works, we must first understand what information is natively stored in a scene in Foundry. Scene data includes walls, lights, ambient sounds, images, fog of war, and drawings. This information follows a scene from world to world without any issues.

But there are times when we wish to store additional information in a scene, like actors and journals, as one would find in a ready-to-go adventure. Once actors and journals on a scene are exported out of one world and into another, the links to the underlying data are lost. This is where scene packer comes to the rescue. Scene packer maintains the links in the ‘packed’ scenes to journals and actors in compendiums, allowing for a truly turn-key solution where anyone could create an ‘adventure’ and export it.

This is the intent of scene packer in a nutshell.

Now, Blair has gone one step further. With his module generator, you can actually create the necessary elements of a full adventure packaged up as a Foundry Module and available to download. A simple solution to a complex series of data packing challenges!

Blair’s Guide

Creating a Foundry VTT module can be quite daunting, time-consuming, and fiddly. I created a module generator to make it easier to get a module up and running quickly. Depending on your requirements, you may not even have to open a text editor.

Visit the generator, fill in the form and download your module zip with all of the values filled in.

The generator supports two modes:

Scene Packer integrated

This mode (listed as “new module” in the generator) creates a new module for you, with Scene Packer module functionality already integrated. This mode is particularly useful for content creators who have an adventure and want to make use of Scene Packer’s functionality, but don’t know any JavaScript or aren’t wanting to fiddle around in a text editor.

Standalone Module

This mode creates a module without any dependencies. You could use this to quickly create a Shared Compendium Module to share your actors/items/journals between worlds. Alternatively, this mode can be used as a starting point for any custom module you wanted to build.

Module generator: https://sneat.github.io/scene-packer-module-generator/

The list is long and includes features like capture a snapshot of the canvas (optionally including the Token vision), shortcuts for layers as well as a quick swap feature between two layers or the ability to filter which layer you want to see or hide.

Additionally it also comes with new features specifically for Walls and Lightning. Hotkeys for Wall types, always have wall chaining activated without having to hold
CTRL
, join wall parts together or templates for different lightning sources. Be sure to checkout the module description for more details on all the features.

Whether you want to access your character sheets or play whole sessions on a mobile device if this appeal to you it has just become a whole lot easier with Mobile Improvements a new module by Sunspots. It offers a complete UI overhaul including better controls with small screens in mind and it utilizes the TouchVTT module to interact with the canvas.

Similar to most mobile apps you can switch between the main view in this case the scene on the canvas and the settings/controls (the sidebar). Each window will be shown full screen but there is a list of all active windows at the bottom which makes switching between them effortless. The macro bar can be toggled on and off to make it mobile friendly. Other features are a toggle to switch between normal and mobile view and the functionality to disable the canvas rendering for better performance or as I would put it less battery drain. Overall this makes the module a solid alternative to the Simple Mobile module.

Welcome back to the Module Roundup a new month has passed which gives us the opportunity to present you again with a couple highlights from the
Foundry VTT
module world. This time we have some tools to help you organize and build your world, play the perfect sound effect when you need it, give Foundry a new look and an easier solution to implement certain animations.

Recently Updated

SoundBoard by Blitz

The first one on the list is the innovative audio solution by Blitz which got a really big update close to releasing this article. Not only does it already support the Audio Overhaul Foundry update in 0.8.1 it also got a bunch of new features. This module allows you to import and use Sound Effects in a pretty, independent window. It also comes with included boards.

The new macro mode generates you a macro that plays a sound which will be used in another new feature to create embeds of said macros in journals which you can click to play it. New options for randomly modulating the pitch each time a sound is played have been added as well as in case you feel the sounds are getting monotonous after a while. A help button has also been added which is quite detailed in covers all the settings and controls the module has to offer. These are not all the new features and fixes that have been added to this release. The list is quite long but if you are interested have look at the changelog yourself.

Note: make sure to turn on the sound in the preview.

Pin Cushion is one of these modules that you have installed since forever and becomes such a natural feature that you forget it is a module. If you have never heard of it before and you like annotating your maps and worlds, it makes giddy for excitement. It enables selecting any icon you want for your map journal pins.

This month its functionality got expanded by contributions from Ethaks and now lets your players create map pins on any scene (if they have permission to create
JournalEntries
). You can set the default permissions for other players for these notes and has the option to store them in folder named after the player so that your existing well organized journal system does not fall into chaos when your players start adding notes on everything they encounter.

This one is cheating a little bit by talking about two modules in this section. However not only are they both from Erceron they also share most of the new features. Both of these modules are what I would consider as quality of life modules as they add the ability to organize your world a tiny little bit more.

As you might have guessed by the names already these modules are letting you create folders for both your macro directory and inside of compendiums. This month they got reworked so the folders work now identically like other directories in
Foundry VTT
. The context menus got extended, a lot of UI improvements and changes as well as exposing an API which lets you gain direct access to the folder objects in case you want to use for a macro or inside another module.

Or are you sick and tired of creating macros for all your items and spells? Otigon has you covered with his excellent module which will work for the free animation pack as well for the Patreon one. The module also depends on you having FXMaster and supports a bunch of modules that mess with the rolling itself you can read more about that here.

Not only automatically detects animations for common items like Mace, Greataxe, Scorching Ray and Cure Wounds. It also adds a new tab into your items where you can customize them and even override them completely to use any animation from the pack you want. My player’s Rapier shoots purple rays when it attacks because why not?

Some people play games where you don’t need a lot of controls that Foundry offers or just think that the UI is too cluttered. If you feel the same way or just want to give the application a fresh look then this module by JeansenVaars is worth taking a look at.

It gets rid of all the UI elements without losing the functionality by hiding them of screen and pop in when you hover it. It is highly customizable, you can change the colours of certain UI elements, set the length of the macro bar and even get rid of the Foundry VTT icon if that bothers you. Last but not least it has a neat little scene preview if you hover them on the navigation bar.

Some readers might know of the web application from RollAdvantage that lets you easily create awesome looking tokens for your game by uploading an image, choose a border and have few settings to customize all without needing any knowledge or skills of a graphics software.

Now you can do all of this directly in Foundry. Instead of choosing an image for a token there is now another button that opens a dialogue window with the Token Stamp 2 application loaded. It gives you all the same options and importing the final token will automatically set it for the actor. All in all pretty convenient if you are using the site already or a looking for a good and easy way to create tokens for your game.

It doesn’t matter if you’re already running one or you’re just planning to, below is a list of modules I think you will find very useful to the overall experience of your text-based FVTT game. For each module, there is a short description about what it does, what settings are available, and any issues that I have encountered while using it. I believe that by breaking each module down, you can pick what fits your game the best!

This module splits the chat tab into three tabs: In Character, Rolls, and Out of Character (OOC). It’s amazing for text-base games because you can keep everything separate. The module also has a feature of only showing in-character chat for characters that are in the same scene, keeping the immersion for everyone involved. The last feature offered that I actually make use of is the ability to link the chat as a discord webhook. I’m using this so that whatever we’re saying in FVTT gets pasted into discord so we can keep it as a chatlog, and players who can’t access FVTT are still able to follow what’s happening in the game through discord.

You probably have heard about this one or you will now – Token Attacher from KayelGee lets you attach anything to tokens and the attachments will move and behave like the token they are linked to. The module got a very big update this month which includes among other things the ability to attach tokens with each other. This means you can have tokens follow each other or use on token as a mount so you don’t have to rely on older (not maintained) modules anymore for this functionality. This is just the tip of the ice berg there is a ton of more awesome stuff in this module you should definitely check out the video by Baileywiki showing off all the new things you can do with it.

There are a bunch of modules from the author tposney that all have nice synergy with each other and are in constant development and I will do them not the justice they deserve by briefly talking about just one of them. That being said it was an exciting month for the Dungeon Master who likes to automate their games as much as possible. MidiQOL is a module for DND5e that automates a lot of things. It received far too many changes and fixes to list them all but two of my personal highlights are support for concentration automation (depends on DAE and CUB being active) and the ability to automate conditional damage bonuses on hit (e.g. Hunter’s Mark) via macros.

Now you can cause developers sleepless nights with this module brought to you by Ethck with the help of Calego and cswendrowski. It lets you report bugs and issues you have for a specific module from within the Foundry UI itself. For this to work module developers need to opt-in – which is as easy as adding two lines into your module manifest – and use either GitHub or GitLab as their place to report issues. As a user you won’t need to register a new account for either because the issues will be posted using the League of Extraordinary FoundryVTT Developers accounts.

And it even works for gridless maps!

Due to Foundry Hub’s release in February we missed out on highlighting some new modules from January. It would be a shame not include them. So here is a bonus round.

Recently Kandashi released a bunch of new modules that are all awesome and would deserve a spot here but my favorite is Next Up. This module will open up the character sheet of the current combatant when using the combat tracker and optionally pan towards the token and if that is not enough it also gives you the functionality of the very popular module Turn Marker if you are looking for an alternative.

Another very active developer recently is IronMonk who released among other modules the TokenBar. This one adds all player tokens that are in the active scene in a neat little movable bar providing not only important information like AC and perception at glance but also functions as tool to easily prompt players with roll checks and award experience points.

Last but not least a feature that many have wished for a long time is finally possible with this module by flameweave000. It adds bezier curve and ellipse tools to the walls layer that will help you build your maps faster and better. It lets you also choose how many wall segments should be used for the curvy walls to improve performance.

An interactive landing page provides players with an immersion building starting point for entering the doorway to your world. Foundry enables us to build beautiful and fully interactive scenes which can provide players a ‘home base’ scene to start from. With the right modules and some creative thinking, we can also create a space where players can access a great deal of information in fun and exciting ways. Let’s take a look at some examples and see how it can be done.

The key to making this landing page truly interactive, is the use of a few modules.

Trigger Happy for clicking on things to activate other things

Forien’s Quest Log for the quest log system

Inline Web Viewer for accessing an interactive website through journals

LootSheetNPC5e for the loot chest if you’re in 5e. It’s available for other systems like Pathfinder2E and 3.5e as well.

Trigger Happy is a powerful module, and if you are not familiar with how to use it, we recommend you start here. Here is a sample of Toldori’s landing page triggers for the Trigger Happy module:

// Click to change the scene
@Token[AndoranMap] @Trigger[click] @Scene[Andoran]

// Click to open character sheet
@Token[YorikCard] @Trigger[click] @Actor[Yorik]
@Token[PartyLoot] @Trigger[click] @Actor[Party's Loot Chest]

// Click to call macro that opens up Forien's Quest Log
@Token[LandingBook] @Trigger[click] @Macro[QuestLog]

// Click to open up journal
@Token[InnerSea] @Trigger[click] @JournalEntry[httpspathfinderwikicom]

// The macro used to open up Forien's Quest Log

QuestLog.render(true);

The key to the creation of triggers is to use the module’s ‘transparent token’ to cover the area of an image you wish to trigger with, then make sure that you toggle the token to be “Invisible” to the players. Combining this with using the “@Trigger[click]” inside the journal entry will create an illusion for your players that they are interacting with things placed on the scene. The transparent token, macros and a helpful README will appear in your compendium after activating the module. Follow the provided instructions (and check youtube for additional helpful videos) and you will be activating things in no time!

Huge thanks to Todori for sharing this fantastic landing page!

Editor’s Note

Our second showcase comes to us courtesy of Cystere.Orling, who uses some animation along with teleporting to turn their landing page into a launching point scenes players can navigate to on their own. A big shout out to Cystere.Orling for sharing their idea!

Inspired by u/DragonbeardNick from the following Reddit post

This landing page makes use of two modules.

Parallaxia for the scrolling player images. Additional information on how to use this module can be found here.

Multilevel Tokens for the teleportation effect. This module also has a great deal of possible uses. Start here.

Cystere.Orling says: I got the scrolling image idea from this post by u/DragonbeardNick and when I asked him how he had the images cycling through what appeared to be an image wider than the screen, he said that it was one long image. For the scrolling I created a tile that was the height of the image I used (using photopea to simply put five separate player images onto one wide image) and the width of the poster. I used the very long image of five as the “fill” image for the tile so when I placed it, it appeared stretched to fit. Then when I selected the tile and activated parallaxia, the image became its actual size and only showed what is currently in view (or in frame), so it appears that it is cycling through.

Check out the modules, pull together some fantastic art, and start creating! See what you can build and post your results in the forum for everyone to see!

The following 10 Foundry Virtual Tabletop modules are so universally essential that everyone should immediately install them:

Nothing. There is no such list, and there never can be.

First off, I apologize for the clickbaity title and flippant answer (“Hey guys, don’t forget to smash those like and subscribe buttons!”), but I feel this is an important topic which deserves a little bit of sass.

While lists of recommended modules can be useful resources when used properly, they can also be unhelpful and even counterproductive without proper context. This is particularly true for users who are new to Foundry VTT, and unfortunately new users are the ones (understandably) looking for such lists to help them get started.

Issues with recommended module lists

As much as I personally love modules (I’ve even created a few), and even though there is a vast universe of amazing modules for Foundry Virtual Tabletop that can improve the online tabletop gaming experience for you and your players, there is no magic one-size-fits-all-list of modules. This is true for a variety of reasons:

Both Foundry VTT and its modules evolve constantly and static lists do not.
Over time, modules may stop being maintained and/or their functionality may be incorporated into core Foundry. When people find outdated lists that contain such outdated modules, it can lead to confusion and significant problems.

For example, if you see a module list that recommends Deselection or Teleport modules, move on. That list is dangerously outdated and should not be used.

Some modules may not work for your game system.
Many lists of modules assume that you are playing D&D 5E. Even modules that claim to be “system agnostic” may have issues in a particular game system or be much less useful.

Each person has different preferences and needs.
Even if you are using the same game system as the person who created the list, such as D&D 5E, people want different things. Some people want as many rolls automated as possible to make things easier and faster, and others want a fully manual process they can control fully. More people fall somewhere in between. Also, just because a module is widely used, such as on that provides 3D dice, you may personally not like it or remember to use it. Unused modules bloat your game unnecessarily.

Some modules are incompatible with other ones.
The module on the list may be great by itself, but it may conflict with another module you are using and love. In particular, try not to install more than one module that extensively overhauls the same part of Foundry, particularly ones that roll dice and generate chat cards with the results. If you do this, be cautious and be prepared that modules my just not play nicely with one another.

Lists can encourage installing many modules at once.
Installing every shiny module on the list can be tempting, but in practice this is not a good idea. It results in a “blob” of new functionality that is confusing and makes it very hard to know where one module starts and the next ends. To get the most out of each module, install one at a time, view its documentation, play with its settings, and try to understand what it’s doing.

It’s important to know how “core” Foundry works before adding modules from a list.
Similarly, try using Foundry with as few modules as possible at first. You may find that you prefer the core Foundry functionality over popular modules in some cases, and it helps greatly to understand what your modules are actually doing once you do add them. It also makes it much harder to debug issues when they do occur.

Find things that you wish you could do, and specifically find modules that add that functionality or smooth out processes that feel rough or awkward to you. When you do, add them slowly.

Not a good idea if you installed Foundry yesterday (or ever, probably).

Okay, fine, but really, where’s the damn list?

With all that said, a list of module recommendations can obviously be very helpful if you keep all the above cautions in mind. You can discover things that you didn’t know existed, or you can think about a module in a new way.

Finding other users who play the same game system and who have similar philosophies and tastes and discussing your favorite modules is preferred over a list, but if you really must… Reddit, YouTube, and the Foundry Discord, have many such lists of recommendations that you can find, just make sure that they are no more than a month or two old at most and only then if no major new stable Foundry VTT version has come out recently. If it has, all bets are off and you need to be even more careful than usual.

Here at Foundry Hub, there is a list of modules sorted by their popularity, as measured by their install rate on the excellent Foundry hosting service The Forge. Additionally, ratings and reviews are available in these listings. The Foundry Hub forums are also a great place to discuss modules and see what other people are using. Upcoming articles will present examples of how to use combinations of modules to achieve amazing results. The Foundry Hub even has plans of listing modules you love right in your user profile.

Just remember kids: view any list of recommended modules with a critical eye, keep an eye out for shiny new finds, and have fun out there!
