Item Creator (DnD 5e) is a GM-focused module for creating and maintaining custom items directly inside Foundry VTT using the native structures of the D&D5e system.

Instead of manually editing Activities, Active Effects, formulas, flags, and document data, the module provides a guided interface for building Weapons, Equipment, and Tools, while preserving compatibility with normal D&D5e character sheets and item workflows.

Main Features

Guided Item Creation

Create custom items through a structured wizard:

  1. Choose Item Type
  2. Select a Base Item
  3. Configure Enhancements
  4. Add Granted Effects
  5. Write the Description
  6. Review and Save

The finished Item is created directly in the World Items Directory.

Supported Item Types

  • Weapons
  • Equipment
  • Tools

Each type only displays properties that are mechanically compatible with it.

Weapons can receive weapon-specific enhancements, while Equipment and Tools can grant bonuses to the Actor without being treated as weapons themselves.

Base Items and Compendiums

Items can be created from:

  • official compendium Items;
  • SRD content;
  • PHB 2024 content;
  • enabled third-party compendiums;
  • existing World Items;
  • completely custom templates.

The module imports compatible names, icons, descriptions, Activities, Active Effects, price, weight, rarity, attunement, and other native data.

Active Effect Normalization

When a base Item already contains native Active Effects, the module translates recognized changes into editable Creator fields.

For example, an Effect that grants both:

  • +1 Armor Class;
  • +1 to all Saving Throws;

is converted into two independent properties inside the Item Creator.

The original Effect is replaced by clean, module-managed Effects when the new Item is saved, preventing hidden duplication or accidental stacking.

Unknown or uncommon Effects and Activities are preserved as imported custom entries rather than silently discarded.

Granted Effects

Items can grant a broad range of Actor bonuses, including:

  • Armor Class;
  • Weapon Attack Rolls;
  • Weapon Damage Rolls;
  • Spell Attack Rolls;
  • Spell Save DC;
  • Ability Scores;
  • Saving Throws;
  • Ability Checks and Skills;
  • Initiative;
  • Maximum Hit Points;
  • resistances, immunities, and vulnerabilities;
  • movement and senses;
  • Critical Threshold changes;
  • Conditional Advantage;
  • Ignore Resistance;
  • Granted Spellcasting.

Effects can be configured to remain active while the Item is:

  • Owned
  • Equipped
  • Equipped and Attuned

The Equipped state can also be used as a simple manual switch for effects controlled through roleplay.

Level-Based Item Progression

Weapons, Equipment, and Tools can unlock or improve properties according to the total character level of the Actor.

Example:

Level 3 — +1 to attack rolls
Level 7 — +2 to attack rolls
Level 13 — +3 to attack rolls

Progression tiers replace earlier stages instead of stacking with them.

A +1 tier followed by a +2 tier results in a total bonus of +2, not +3.

Progression is recalculated automatically when:

  • the Actor gains or loses levels;
  • an Item is equipped or unequipped;
  • attunement changes;
  • the Item is added, removed, or updated;
  • the world is loaded.

The original World Item remains unchanged. Each Actor receives the appropriate active tier for their own level.

Granted Spellcasting

Items can grant Spells selected from enabled compendiums.

Granted Spells can use:

  • limited uses;
  • rest recovery;
  • spell slots or no spell slots;
  • custom Save DC;
  • custom Spell Attack Bonus;
  • Actor spellcasting defaults;
  • conditional visibility in the Actor Spellbook;
  • level-based unlocking.

Adding a granted Spell automatically marks the Item as magical, but does not automatically add an enchantment bonus or require attunement.

Automatic Mechanical Description

The GM’s flavor text remains at the top of the Item description.

Below it, the module can generate a mechanical summary containing:

  • fixed Item properties;
  • Granted Effects;
  • Granted Spells;
  • complete level progression.

Example:

Level Progression

Weapon Attack Roll Bonus
[Level 3 — +1 to attack rolls]
[Level 7 — +2 to attack rolls]

The generated section is updated when the Item is edited and is not duplicated.

Scroll Factory

The module includes a dedicated Scroll Factory inside the Item Creator menu.

The GM can:

  • drag a Spell into the Scroll Factory;
  • select a Spell through the native Compendium Browser;
  • use the native D&D5e Spell Scroll creation prompt;
  • create the finished Scroll directly in the World Items Directory.

Scrolls use the Spell’s base level and preserve the native D&D5e structure, including Activities, DC, attack bonus, price, and embedded Spell data.

Scrolls created by the factory remain compatible with normal D&D5e workflows, including character inventory use and supported Scribe Spell systems.

Editing Existing Items

Managed Items can be reopened through:

Edit with Item Creator

The GM can then:

  • update the existing Item;
  • save the result as a new copy;
  • change imported properties;
  • add progression tiers;
  • modify Granted Effects;
  • update Granted Spellcasting;
  • preserve compatible external data.

Permissions

The Item Creator and Scroll Factory are available only to GMs.

The module does not replace or intercept Foundry’s native Create Item button.
