In our setting, that would be a certain genius wizard expelled from the Mage Academy. What did he do? He realized not only could arcane spark fuel the spells, but blood could, too. At first, the animals were sufficient. Later, he built this bloodmage dungeon and continued experimenting on sentient beings...
