We’ve been hard at work preparing our latest tool designed to help the Foundry VTT community, and this time we’re going global!

We are proud to present the Foundry Hub Weblate website. A platform dedicated to helping both developers and users localize Foundry VTT modules and systems.

Any (free) package localization can be hosted on the Foundry Hub Weblate

Up until now, while some developers have been using their own localization software, most of the existing packages are either not localized or use flat
.json
files and a good pair of eyes to maintain their translation files.

With this initiative, we hope to encourage the community to improve package accessibility for non-English speakers.

Some key points:

We take care of the technical stuff; adding a new package on the Weblate server is trivial for the developers.

No need to know how to use Git or how to create Pull Request for the users who wish to help translate. Just use the website.

Thanks to our custom addon, users can add an entire new language to a project without any help from the developer. Weblate even edits the package manifest for them.

No risk to the package repository; changes are automatically sent as a Pull Request once every 24 hours.

Want some help from an AI? Machine translation suggestions from DeepL are available directly while translating a project.

If you are a bilingual player wondering how you can contribute to the community or a developer wishing to empower Foundry VTT players from all over the world, check the Foundry Hub Weblate!

As for every other project we maintain (this website, foundry.wiki, Weblate), server costs are covered by donations. If you like what we do, please consider donating to help us keep the lights on.

Hello everyone,

It was long overdue, but I’ve removed some dead sections from the website, namely the video section and the forum.

I’m not crossing the idea of these features forever, but until I find a sustainable solution, it’s better for the website’s health to remove them. It allows us to focus our efforts on the most active pages (package discovery and blog-like content) while having the time to host some cool community efforts like the League’s Package Jam.

The video section was not automated and was too cumbersome for the video makers to use. If I can find a way to get newly posted meaningful videos about Foundry automatically, I’ll add them back.

The forum never found its user critical mass. Between the Discord preferred by power users and the Reddit community well established for newcomers, there were just not enough people interested for the moment.

A huge thanks to anyone involved in the creation of these categories.

Please note the data is not lost. If you need to backup stuff from the forum, please send me a DM over Discord, and I’ll send you a copy of the data you need.

Foundry Hub will always be moving and changing to adapt to the Foundry VTT ecosystem. Our goal will always be to provide the missing pieces in our community, not to compete with the better alternatives.

Changelog

This year we have a two-phase voting system.

First, a panel of volunteer judges will each nominate entries for consideration in each category. The top entries in each category will form the shortlist for that category!

Afterward, we’ll open the voting to anyone with a free Foundry Hub account. Each Foundry Hub member votes for up to three of the nominees in each category. The one with the most votes is the winner! Don’t forget the best overall package, which every package will be eligible for! If it’s your first time submitting a FVTT package, your package will automatically be nominated for the “first package” category.

If you aren’t able to participate by submitting a package, we will make a public call for volunteer judges in August, so make sure to join our Discord server and get the @league-announcements role to be notified for that. People entering into the Package jam are not eligible. Anyone who doesn’t complete their package in time for the jam may submit their interest as a judge instead.

A developer can have a maximum of 2 packages nominated per category. If a category doesn’t get more than three nominees, that category will be removed. For the public voting phase, Foundry Hub user votes have equal weight and are not ranked. A user can cast a maximum of 3 votes. The package with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie for most votes, tied entries share the victory. The prize recipient will be decided according to a 1vs1 Fifth Edition Dungeons and Dragons Level 14 deathmatch adjudicated by an impartial dungeonmaster.

Last month, Foundry Gaming announced an essential change regarding future software updates. Currently in its “0.8.9” version, the forthcoming update of the software is expected by the end of the year. This version will contain major new features such as card pack management and significant performance improvements. However, the first change that will be visible to users is the name of the version itself. Foundry Gaming has decided to put an end to its “0.x.x” naming convention, which was deemed unsuitable for the development process used by the company. The next version, named “version 9”, uses simplified numbering and aims to make everyone agree: the community of developers, users, and Foundry Gaming themselves.

This name change is the tip of the iceberg, as Foundry Gaming reimagines their development cycles in a new phased timeline.

In this article, we will see what these changes mean from the user’s point of view. We also interviewed Anathema, Project Coordinator at Foundry Gaming, for his insights.

The new naming convention

The name of the versions is now directly linked to the current development phase. Thus, it is no longer necessary to search the official website or Discord announcements when hearing about version “0.8.5” to determine whether a version is intended for the general public or community testers and developers.

Separated into three parts, each version follows the same path. Only the number of iterations per phase is flexible and will depend on the stability and complexity of each release.

In addition, each release is labeled with a build number. This number is a unique identifier that further determines the code version packed into this release. In general, you should not need to worry about this number if you are not a developer yourself.

As for the phases themselves, Foundry Gaming has redesigned its six-phase approach for each release, from planning to the maintenance period.

An article dedicated to this new cycle is available at this address: https://foundryvtt.com/article/versioning/

Anathema: The answer to this one is kind of two-fold. As a self-hosted platform, Foundry Virtual Tabletop offers users a lot of control over how and when software updates are applied to their games.

By providing very clearly labeled definitions for a version, we can communicate with the target audience and help make sure that people aren’t accidentally using an unstable version designed for testing. We also offer a very high degree of customization through add-on modules, allowing users to set their games up the way they want.

Unfortunately, as any PC gamer will tell you, using mods for a video game comes with a degree of uncertainty about whether an update might disrupt gameplay. By communicating our versioning schema better to users, we can help users with module-heavy games better understand when the time is right for an update.

Anathema: During version 0.5.x the software was feeling very stable and pretty well-rounded in terms of features, and Atropos (owner and lead developer) felt that the software had reached a good place for it to transition from a Patreon early-access subscription to a directly purchased license.

That didn’t, however, mean that the development was complete. Even today, there are still some major features that we feel are missing and we’re still determined to add. Atropos felt that releasing as 1.0 would give the wrong impression, that the software was somehow ‘done’ and had added everything we wanted to add.

That simply isn’t the way Foundry does things as a company. We are always looking to add new features, to iterate on the software, and to bring new functionality in for our userbase. As such, we proceeded from one major version (0.5.x beta) to the next major version (0.6.x release) and released the software for purchase.

Anathema: Ultimately it was really related to communication. During the 0.8.x development cycle, we observed that our community developers had some difficulty determining when best to begin the process of updating their modules and systems for the new version.

We also heard some feedback that the period for testing and giving feedback felt short for community devs. Obviously, we don’t pressure community developers to update on any sort of schedule, and we recognize that people have lives outside of voluntarily developing their projects, but we also want to be sure we’re doing everything we can to ease the burden of maintaining community projects.

By changing our approach to versioning to more closely align with our internal phased approach to development, we can better communicate with our community developers what stage a new version is in.

If we’re operating in the prototyping phase, the community developers know that major changes are coming with each prototype version, but by the time we’re in the API Development phase, it should be safe for them to begin updating their content and providing us with direct feedback on changes we should make to better support them.

However, with recognition to users who run their worlds with a large quantity of modules, it is important to assess whether your modules have updated to the latest version or not.

Foundry Virtual Tabletop does not take into account module stability when we mark an update as stable, so for heavily modified games, a stable release can (and always will) cause changes to your game. We beat this drum as much as we can, but in any case, users who are updating should ALWAYS back up their user data folder before proceeding with an update.

Anathema: Users of modules and systems should see some pretty big benefits in this versioning change, though they may not be readily apparent.

By providing community developers with increased communication and increased clarity throughout our phased approach to development, we hope to significantly ease the difficulty of updating third-party packages for Foundry VTT.

As a result, users should be able to trust that the modules and systems they use won’t be as drastically impacted by changes in the core software. In addition, the new versioning system means we can allow community developers to mark their modules compatible with an entire Version, reducing the occurrence of inaccurate compatibility labels in the interface for users.

Effectively, the average user should only see benefits coming from this change for their usage of modules and systems.

Cody: My very first TTRPG experience was back towards the end of high school – a friend ran a short-lived campaign of “One Piece D20”. We spent over an hour talking to an NPC about cooking rather than follow any of the plot hooks, which means I got a pretty traditional experience! My class had an Iron Golem companion, which due to bad balancing won the session 2 PCvPCvNPC brawl tournament and earned the Moose-Moose fruit. That companion was the birth of the Iron Moose, a brand that’s stuck with me ever since.

These days I run and stream a campaign in the 13th Age system on behalf of the publisher, an offshoot system from the writers behind D&D 3.5e and 4e. I like the system because it strikes a good balance between having rules to form a story framework and not being so heavy as to be clunky. It actively encourages players to be an active part of the story without taking the reins from the GM. My players are currently trying to defeat (or tame!) a giant living dungeon that strikes at cities to form ever growing inner-dungeon-layers, which has been a lot of fun to find and build maps for. You can check out our stream every Monday at 7pm – 9pm CDT at http://twitch.tv/pelgranepress

Cody: I started programming when I was 13 years old! I was playing a game called Second Life, which was a sandbox-style game that had its own scripting language based on Lua powering all the user-created objects. This frequently broke said vehicle, but I was hooked by trying to figure out how to modify things and make them my own. I was lucky enough to have some kind mentors to start me down the track of self-learning, and then was able to take some basic programming classes my Freshman and Sophomore year of high school. I’ve never stopped programming since then.

Wandering through a marketplace feels so much more alive when you see NPC’s bartering and hear the sound of footsteps and wind. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see several creators pick up the module and use it in their creations. One day, I hope to be able to plug it into GPT-3 to autogenerate new unique NPC chatter.

Cody: The big one, of course, is that we’ve changed how we talk about our releases. No longer do we use 0.8.X – we use Version 9. This was an effort I led, and I am glad Atropos trusted me to steer the change of such a pivotal part of the software. There were several technical benefits that Foundry enjoyed as part of this change, and I think developers will be pleased to find they can now declare their modules compatible with all of Version 9, something they couldn’t do under the old versioning. So far, we’ve seen good benefits from the new clarity the versioning brings as well, and I hope that continues.

Although plenty of people are excited about Card support, I am personally excited about the potential feature of Keybind Management. Foundry has grown a lot, and so have the number of modules. It would be great to have a centralized place to manage what keyboard shortcuts do what.

Cody: It’s a lot of fun! When I originally write modules, I write them for me and how my table would use them. Releasing them and putting them out to users always blows me away with how many interesting and varied ways people play TTRPG’s. Incorporating those workflows to help them out is fun and rewarding, although I’ve certainly had less time for that than I did before – all of my creative juice goes into Foundry Core these days, which is helping users at a completely different level! I’m a big fan of Open Source, so when I started down the path of trying to make working on Foundry my job (success, although in a different way than I imagined!), I wanted to come up with a monetization setup I felt good about. I arrived at an “early access” program – Alpha users could get the WIP builds and give feedback as I built a feature. Beta users get 2 weeks of early access to a final build, then the release goes live and free to everyone. Once a project starts wrapping up, the whole thing goes Open Source as well. This resonated well with others, and I now work with Asacolips, who provides PBtA and other projects via the same Patreon to give our Patrons a little more bang for the buck.

Ben: I was always fascinated with role playing games. As a kid I learned pen & paper games which feel like the spiritual parents of traditional RPG computer games like World of Warcraft, where everything that happens is decided by dice rolls. But knowing them and playing them are two different stories. It took me about 30 years to play (or should I say lead?) my first tabletop game. You could call me a noob, but I suffer from a heavy form of hyper-fixation and I consumed so much content (streams, rule systems, etc.), that I would consider myself considerably experience in terms of TTRPGs. Even though I started maybe three years ago I can talk about Pathfinder, Shadowrun, Blades in the Dark, Powered by the Apocalypse games like Dungeon World, as well as about The Dark Eye and Warhammer Fantasy.

Ben: Early on, I never took 3D modeling or map design very seriously. I started during the early 2000s as a teenager with modding projects. I was part of a team that built a Resident Evil mod for Half Life 2 and the Source Engine. During that time I taught myself sound design, video editing, modeling, texturing and so on. After my modding time I did a lot YouTube stuff. I was pretty successful on YouTube in the early days and I also tried a startup. But in the end, I decided to toss these because I didn’t really warm up to the whole ‘influencer’ industry and the way they look at people. So I worked a more or less normal job as Data Scientist in a telecommunication company. As a DM I invested a lot of time to create cool assets like animated maps. A lot of people asked me to use my content so I was looking for a cheap way to distribute my content and found Patreon. I was fortunate that people really liked what I did. I was successful, and on a side note, I never expected that nor was that the final plan. By the time I noticed people like what I do and are willing to pay it, I decided to try to make it a full time job.

Dorgendubal chose Moulinette for his suite of modules because “most of what my modules do is transforming data into something else. Moulinette Cloud automatically converts images to webp format, then the Tiles module reuses the images and converts them into tiles, tokens or articles.”

SW: Moulinette provides a set of tools to help DMs managing and searching their assets. You can drop all your assets in one or more folders and the module will index them in order to access them in Foundry with user-friendly interfaces. For example, an image can serve as a tile but also as a token (for a character) or even as a journal.

On top of that the module also implements a few integrations with external search engines like game-icons.net, the BBC sound effects library or even image search using the Creative Commons search engine or Bing.

You are in the middle of a game and a player asks you for a description of the inn? You can within seconds search for images with terms like “rpg medieval inn” and generate a journal that you can share with your players.

The Moulinette Sounds module also provides a soundboard which allows a GM to quickly play a selected or randomly chosen sound from a list, as well as decorate the sounds on it with different icons.

SW: It is very rewarding to see other users enjoying your work. I have a particular motivation because, as a DM, I use my modules every week. But I’m impressed with the amount of great suggestions for improvement coming from users. And I especially love chatting with creators, understanding how they work, and trying to find ways to make it easier for them. If I can save one hour an artist spends “wasting” his time in packaging and publishing his creations, that means that this same artist can spend that hour creating amazing assets.

SW: I am now focusing on the cloud part of Moulinette. My goal with this project is to bring creators closer to their users. Moulinette Cloud offers fast hosting capabilities for creators which can save them a lot of time. For example, Moulinette Cloud automatically converts images to webp format or even generates thumbnails for videos. It also offers integration with Patreon to secure your assets. On the other hand, users no longer need to download, update, host and index assets from the content creators they support. As soon as a creator publishes a pack, it becomes immediately available to his supporters (through Moulinette’s interfaces and searches). You don’t even need to reload your page.
