Blair: I’m a self-taught coder having started a little over 20 years ago. I was running a LAN party in Brisbane, Australia with a group of friends (the LAN still runs today, although not so regularly due to Covid restrictions) and we needed a website to be able to host information on when our next LAN was and what to bring (this is back where you didn’t have an internet connection at a LAN party, so you had to bring everything you needed with you). This was my entry into HTML and CSS along with PHP. Over time this eventually led into my overall career, with games being a hobby. I had been playing D&D in person with pen and paper for a few years but then Covid meant that we couldn’t meet up in person anymore, so had to look to online solutions. Eventually I made the switch to Foundry VTT and haven’t looked back. The level of customization and openness really appeals to me, especially with a programming background.

Blair: I GM D&D for a group each fortnight (when there’s enough of us available) in a fairly haphazard way due to the players’ constantly shifting availability. This means that we often stretch out one-shot style adventures and attempt to tie them together in a somewhat meaningful way – this is what lead me to creating the Scene Packer module. I was wanting to move my mini-adventures from my local dev machine onto my Foundry VTT instance to pull them into the world there. An “adventure module” was the way to do it, but my scene journal pins and actor tokens weren’t linked because the IDs changed. Thus, Scene Packer was born. I do get to play as a player every now and then but that’s far less often than when I’m GMing. I do enjoy building out a mini-adventure, trying out all of the various amazing modules that people create within the community and so it’s usually me who has yet-another-adventure ready to go. One of my players is willing to GM an Alien RPG campaign at some point and I am very keen to play that – I’ve been purposefully avoiding reading or looking at any of the content so as to not spoil any of it.

Blair: I can see the content ecosystem for Foundry VTT really exploding. With tools like my module generator and Scene Packer making it easier for non-developers to make modules, it’s just a matter of distribution. Currently to distribute your content you need to create a module that the end user installs and activates in their world. This is an easy step to do, but it’s still a required step. A lot of content creators currently release their content via Patreon, so I’m working with the developer of the Moulinette module to integrate Scene Packer. Moulinette is a way for end users to easily search, browse and follow their favorite Patreon creators and install content straight into their Foundry VTT world with no need to install custom modules for each adventure. I’m very excited about the amazing content that already gets built, let alone all of the amazing new content that will continue to be built for Foundry VTT.

Understanding Scene-Packer (A Layperson’s Guide)

To understand how scene packer works, we must first understand what information is natively stored in a scene in Foundry. Scene data includes walls, lights, ambient sounds, images, fog of war, and drawings. This information follows a scene from world to world without any issues.

But there are times when we wish to store additional information in a scene, like actors and journals, as one would find in a ready-to-go adventure. Once actors and journals on a scene are exported out of one world and into another, the links to the underlying data are lost. This is where scene packer comes to the rescue. Scene packer maintains the links in the ‘packed’ scenes to journals and actors in compendiums, allowing for a truly turn-key solution where anyone could create an ‘adventure’ and export it.

This is the intent of scene packer in a nutshell.

Now, Blair has gone one step further. With his module generator, you can actually create the necessary elements of a full adventure packaged up as a Foundry Module and available to download. A simple solution to a complex series of data packing challenges!

Blair’s Guide

Creating a Foundry VTT module can be quite daunting, time-consuming, and fiddly. I created a module generator to make it easier to get a module up and running quickly. Depending on your requirements, you may not even have to open a text editor.

Visit the generator, fill in the form and download your module zip with all of the values filled in.

The generator supports two modes:

Scene Packer integrated

This mode (listed as “new module” in the generator) creates a new module for you, with Scene Packer module functionality already integrated. This mode is particularly useful for content creators who have an adventure and want to make use of Scene Packer’s functionality, but don’t know any JavaScript or aren’t wanting to fiddle around in a text editor.

Standalone Module

This mode creates a module without any dependencies. You could use this to quickly create a Shared Compendium Module to share your actors/items/journals between worlds. Alternatively, this mode can be used as a starting point for any custom module you wanted to build.

Module generator: https://sneat.github.io/scene-packer-module-generator/

Cody: My very first TTRPG experience was back towards the end of high school – a friend ran a short-lived campaign of “One Piece D20”. We spent over an hour talking to an NPC about cooking rather than follow any of the plot hooks, which means I got a pretty traditional experience! My class had an Iron Golem companion, which due to bad balancing won the session 2 PCvPCvNPC brawl tournament and earned the Moose-Moose fruit. That companion was the birth of the Iron Moose, a brand that’s stuck with me ever since.

These days I run and stream a campaign in the 13th Age system on behalf of the publisher, an offshoot system from the writers behind D&D 3.5e and 4e. I like the system because it strikes a good balance between having rules to form a story framework and not being so heavy as to be clunky. It actively encourages players to be an active part of the story without taking the reins from the GM. My players are currently trying to defeat (or tame!) a giant living dungeon that strikes at cities to form ever growing inner-dungeon-layers, which has been a lot of fun to find and build maps for. You can check out our stream every Monday at 7pm – 9pm CDT at http://twitch.tv/pelgranepress

Cody: I started programming when I was 13 years old! I was playing a game called Second Life, which was a sandbox-style game that had its own scripting language based on Lua powering all the user-created objects. Some of these objects had scripts that kindly declared their variables at the top of the file, so young Cody discovered he could adjust some vehicles to have a top speed 100x higher than default. This frequently broke said vehicle, but I was hooked by trying to figure out how to modify things and make them my own. I was lucky enough to have some kind mentors to start me down the track of self-learning, and then was able to take some basic programming classes my Freshman and Sophomore year of high school. I’ve never stopped programming since then.

Wandering through a marketplace feels so much more alive when you see NPC’s bartering and hear the sound of footsteps and wind. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see several creators pick up the module and use it in their creations. One day, I hope to be able to plug it into GPT-3 to autogenerate new unique NPC chatter.

Cody: The big one, of course, is that we’ve changed how we talk about our releases. No longer do we use 0.8.X – we use Version 9. This was an effort I led, and I am glad Atropos trusted me to steer the change of such a pivotal part of the software. There were several technical benefits that Foundry enjoyed as part of this change, and I think developers will be pleased to find they can now declare their modules compatible with all of Version 9, something they couldn’t do under the old versioning. So far, we’ve seen good benefits from the new clarity the versioning brings as well, and I hope that continues.

Although plenty of people are excited about Card support, I am personally excited about the potential feature of Keybind Management. Foundry has grown a lot, and so have the number of modules. It would be great to have a centralized place to manage what keyboard shortcuts do what.

Cody: It’s a lot of fun! When I originally write modules, I write them for me and how my table would use them. Releasing them and putting them out to users always blows me away with how many interesting and varied ways people play TTRPG’s. Incorporating those workflows to help them out is fun and rewarding, although I’ve certainly had less time for that than I did before – all of my creative juice goes into Foundry Core these days, which is helping users at a completely different level! I’m a big fan of Open Source, so when I started down the path of trying to make working on Foundry my job (success, although in a different way than I imagined!), I wanted to come up with a monetization setup I felt good about. I arrived at an “early access” program – Alpha users could get the WIP builds and give feedback as I built a feature. Beta users get 2 weeks of early access to a final build, then the release goes live and free to everyone. Once a project starts wrapping up, the whole thing goes Open Source as well. This resonated well with others, and I now work with Asacolips, who provides PBtA and other projects via the same Patreon to give our Patrons a little more bang for the buck.

Ben: I was always fascinated with role playing games. As a kid I learned pen & paper games which feel like the spiritual parents of traditional RPG computer games like World of Warcraft, where everything that happens is decided by dice rolls. But knowing them and playing them are two different stories. It took me about 30 years to play (or should I say lead?) my first tabletop game. You could call me a noob, but I suffer from a heavy form of hyper-fixation and I consumed so much content (streams, rule systems, etc.), that I would consider myself considerably experience in terms of TTRPGs. Even though I started maybe three years ago I can talk about Pathfinder, Shadowrun, Blades in the Dark, Powered by the Apocalypse games like Dungeon World, as well as about The Dark Eye and Warhammer Fantasy.

Ben: Early on, I never took 3D modeling or map design very seriously. I started during the early 2000s as a teenager with modding projects. I was part of a team that built a Resident Evil mod for Half Life 2 and the Source Engine. During that time I taught myself sound design, video editing, modeling, texturing and so on. After my modding time I did a lot YouTube stuff. I was pretty successful on YouTube in the early days and I also tried a startup. But in the end, I decided to toss these because I didn’t really warm up to the whole ‘influencer’ industry and the way they look at people. So I worked a more or less normal job as Data Scientist in a telecommunication company. As a DM I invested a lot of time to create cool assets like animated maps. A lot of people asked me to use my content so I was looking for a cheap way to distribute my content and found Patreon. I was fortunate that people really liked what I did. I was successful, and on a side note, I never expected that nor was that the final plan. By the time I noticed people like what I do and are willing to pay it, I decided to try to make it a full time job.

So, after closing that chapter I would like to use the sheer endless possibilities of the Unreal Engine to bring stunning sceneries and maps you can’t create without a “Triple-A” engine. But since I have a uniquely realistic and dark-ish style, I also need to create basic maps like taverns, roads, ships and so on.
Ben: Well frankly I started Beneos Tokens because I could :P. Don’t misunderstand: every time I created a battle map, I always saw all the cool assets I would never be able to use. I have hundreds of high-quality 3D models made by me or commercially licensed via the Unreal Engine Store. They are ready and awesome, so why not use them? I can offer more high-quality content, make some money to reach my goal of being able to make a living out of the best hobby in the whole universe and can use my own tokens in my games. And as a giant bonus I can work with my best friend Leon who creates those super cool stat blocks for every creature with unique abilities and a pretty straightforward design philosophy. He is also a great DM and way more creative than I am.

Moulinette is a series of modules created by Sven Werlen, aka Dorgendubal, a talented programmer from Switzerland who now lives in Montréal, Canada. The modules consist of a core and 5 sub-modules which have different functions. You only need to install the core and then you are free to install whichever modules suit your needs.

There’s a lot here so let’s dive in! First up we hear from Sven and learn how this fantastic suite of modules came about.

SW: Moulinette provides a set of tools to help DMs managing and searching their assets. You can drop all your assets in one or more folders and the module will index them in order to access them in Foundry with user-friendly interfaces. For example, an image can serve as a tile but also as a token (for a character) or even as a journal.

On top of that the module also implements a few integrations with external search engines like game-icons.net, the BBC sound effects library or even image search using the Creative Commons search engine or Bing.

You are in the middle of a game and a player asks you for a description of the inn? You can within seconds search for images with terms like “rpg medieval inn” and generate a journal that you can share with your players.

The Moulinette Sounds module also provides a soundboard which allows a GM to quickly play a selected or randomly chosen sound from a list, as well as decorate the sounds on it with different icons.

Moulinette Cloud offers fast hosting capabilities for creators which can save them a lot of time. For example, Moulinette Cloud automatically converts images to webp format or even generates thumbnails for videos. It also offers integration with Patreon to secure your assets. On the other hand, users no longer need to download, update, host and index assets from the content creators they support. As soon as a creator publishes a pack, it becomes immediately available to his supporters (through Moulinette’s interfaces and searches). You don’t even need to reload your page.

BW: I am the father of 3 boys, and screens were taking over their lives. I wanted something that we could do together that let us interact and play in more creative ways. I was listening to Critical Role at the time and was thinking back to my childhood and the great memories (and skills) I developed through D&D. So we started an epic 2 year game and they loved it.

The problem was that I couldn’t find maps that I was happy with. So I discovered Dungeondraft, and then Forgotten Adventures, and then I started to post maps to Reddit that would get 1,000 upvotes. Various someones suggested I do a Patreon, which sounded absurd at the time, but interesting. Fast-forward to today, and I’ve got a thriving Patreon and a valued community of fellow nerds and techno-artists around me. I love it.

I’m focused on the fantasy space at the moment. But if you follow my work, I really push the boundaries of technology and art. I make Dungeondraft and Foundry and even the core artwork do things that no one has seen before. I like combining macros with modules and interesting visual art to create spaces that will make players gasp and squeal with excitement. I know the feeling when, as a DM, I do something that really impresses my players. It’s sad how much we live for that moment. But it’s infinitely satisfying.

The user experience is as simple as it gets, and with the ability to change the artwork to something like Forgotten Adventures or Tom Cartos, it means ANYONE can be a decent map maker in a very short amount of time. I’ve also helped bring attention to Foundry, Dungeondraft, and the artists that I find exceptional along the way, like Forgotten Adventures and Tom Cartos. That’s also rewarding to me.

KKRT: This might come as a surprise, but I only discovered TTRPGs a few years ago. I had heard of D&D before of course, but never really knew what it was exactly. I think I’ve discovered what D&D was through the Netflix series Stranger Things and through The Big Bang Theory, and that brought back a lot of memories for the Choose Your Own Adventure fantasy novels which were my favorite books as a child. I was always a big fan of RPG video games, and to me, a video game’s value is in how well the story is told and the connection to the characters; so once I realized I could play any character I wanted and build my own story with infinite possibilities, I was hooked. I first started reading the Mistborn RPG rule book, as I already had it and I’m a huge Brandon Sanderson fan, but the learning curve was a bit too steep and I didn’t know anyone else who had read the Mistborn books, so I turned to Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

I asked my sister if she knew anyone who would like to play. She got her World of Warcraft guild friends to join and we formed a group of 7 players + DM. Nobody wanted to be a DM so I nervously volunteered. I started watching Critical Role to try and learn about how games should be. We tried Lost Mine of Phandelver first, which didn’t go so well (due to my lack of experience and trying to emulate Matt Mercer), then we switched to Curse of Strahd, which was a much better experience. I DMd that game every week for a little over two years before the evil Strahd was slain.

My favorite RPG is D&D 5th edition, with Curse of Strahd as the game I loved the most because I’ve lived it for 2 years. I haven’t read a lot of the other D&D books as I don’t want to spoil anything and I still hold hope to be a player in a long term campaign once time permits. I also can’t answer a “what is your favorite” question without also giving a shout out to the Final Fantasy VII video game which made me fall in love with the RPG genre itself.

KKRT: It’s exhausting, LOL! What took me down this path is probably insanity. I love Foundry, obviously, but as I’d been very active in the Foundry discord early on, I’ve found myself helping people try to get their routers configured over and over again and it was annoying having to answer the same questions all the time. I don’t like to repeat myself, so if I see a question get asked too often, then my instinct is that it means something needs to be fixed and made easier for the user. My very first contribution to Foundry has been to add support for UPnP to automatically open router ports so users didn’t need to do it manually anymore. That helped a lot but for some people, it wasn’t working and manually port forwarding was simply not possible (router is buggy, their ISP blocked the connections, they weren’t tech savvy enough to figure it out, etc…) and the usual answer we would give was “setup a server on AWS”.

One day, I had to setup a server on AWS myself, and that drove me crazy! The amount of complication and new terms and googling I had to do was insane. It took me hours just to get it done, and I realized that giving that answer to users who didn’t even understand how to do port forwarding in their routers was clearly a poor solution. I felt bad for having ever given that advice. There had to be a better way. I started thinking of a service that would bring the Roll20 user experience (in how you sign up, click a button and get started right away) to Foundry, lowering the barrier of entry and bringing with it features that are simply impossible to achieve in a self-hosted environment, like the automatic user management and invitation link system. At the time, I was also brainstorming a way to switch Foundry from one world to another automatically based on the URL you try to access. I merged both ideas and that’s where The Forge was born. I worked on it for a while, then that became the only thing I was doing.

For nearly a year, I’ve worked an average of 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. I had some short periods where I dipped to 12 hours a day, or I would “take the day off” (meaning I’d only do about 4 hours of work), but adrenaline had fueled me throughout the whole year. I wanted to provide a service that I would be proud of, one that I would be happy to use as a user. A quality service with great features that does more than just setup a server for you, one that enhances the experience as a whole and is affordable. I’ve worked so hard on optimizations that we were able to provide some unparalleled performance to users while offering the most affordable service with the most features and value.

I’ve recently had to adapt from being a software developer to being an entrepreneur, a business owner, a boss and about a dozen other titles. Managing projects and people and learning about payment methods, VAT, accounting, international law and more has been a challenge. The truth is that I hate that job of a CEO, and I would much rather be writing code all day every day, but I’m a bit stuck taking care of this business at the same time. By the end of the day, after having spent 8 or 10 hours just responding to emails and messages, I’m too exhausted to be writing code, so that was a bit depressing. Thankfully I now have some great people around me who are taking on a lot of that workload, so I can have more time doing what I love: adding cool features! I heard the term “the accidental entrepreneur” and I found it funny, because that’s what I am. I don’t regret becoming an entrepreneur, and I am extremely proud of everything that I’ve achieved, but yeah, I’d like to have more time to code.

KKRT: The Forge itself is special because it provides a unique user experience and brings Foundry Virtual Tabletop to the masses. Foundry was created with a self-hosted purpose. That meant sacrifices had to be made in the design, so users that are self hosting, whether at home or through a cloud provider or one of the other hosting partners, are unfortunately stuck within these same limitations. We’ve worked hard in the past year to break away from those limitations and provide a more cloud-oriented hosting solution that increases the performance and security beyond what you could ever get by running Foundry locally.

We simplify the experience of hosting, so that anyone who can afford a license can pick up and play a game, regardless of their background or technical knowledge. We have a massive focus on convenience which makes us the easiest hosting platform out to use and we go above and beyond with our features to make it even better than the core Foundry experience. Whether it’s the assets library, the game and user manager, the Bazaar, or the upcoming D&D Beyond integration, we want to make everything about your games easier and better.

Eventually, I became the project leader for aMSN for 10 years, I joined Collabora, a software company that specialized in FOSS, and I kept hacking away on cool projects whenever I could.
For example, you wouldn’t ask “how can I open the token config dialog”, because you already know exactly where to find the answer: it’s right there in the Foundry code, since you know Foundry opens the token config dialog at some point, you just have to find where and how it does it. By being given an answer, you will tend to apply it then forget it, but by actually looking for the answer yourself, you will not only remember it more clearly because you suffered to find what you wanted, but you will also learn other things at the same time. While this takes longer than asking the question, it also saves you time in the long run because the next time you need something, you’ll be much more likely to find it quickly than asking the question of someone and then waiting for an answer. Even if you don’t find your answer, you’ll have learned something else along the way and you’ll have honed your skills. By using this kind of methodology (RTFM*+RTFS**) for years, you’ll become a better programmer.

I would say this applies both to veteran programmers and people looking to learn. In both cases, you need patience, passion and dedication, and you will look for the answer, find it and continuously get better.

KKRT: I think Foundry’s features are very complete and most of the new features at this point are just adding on an already amazing product. I mean, did you see that upcoming overhead tiles feature? It’s just an awesome feature that adds extra value to Foundry and I can’t wait to play with that.

One of the features I’m personally most excited about in Foundry is improvements to the Compendiums. This is something that I’ve touched on at my Patreon as one of the things I wanted to improve. I wanted to write a module for it but never got around to it. I think there is a lot of promise for what we could do with compendiums, making it easier to use or for creators to create modules with great content in an easy to manage way for players and DMs, and I can’t wait to see the improvements that Foundry will bring to the compendiums in a future release.

As to the future of the Forge and Foundry, I would love to see an even tighter integration between the two. So far, I’ve mostly been working on top of Foundry, handling the infrastructure around it in order to bring it to a state where it appears nearly cloud native. I’d like to work even more closely with Foundry on providing such an integrated solution, and provide improvements to the Foundry platform itself. I’ve written quite a few modules for Foundry to improve the quality of life of the DMs and players, and if I can do more of that, leveraging new abilities that the Forge provides, then I think that would be amazing.

Seriously though, I have so many plans that I don’t think I could get to do everything in a single lifetime. I’m getting quite a bit of excitement with the recently released beta of the D&D Beyond integration with The Forge, so I’d like to work a lot more on that. There is so much potential there, with a compendium browser and search tool, a character builder and all sorts of tools that could be built around the D&D Beyond API that I’m using with The Forge.

I also have some cool integration plans with Demiplane, and of course, my long awaited Time Machine feature for World Builder subscribers. I’m also noticing many artists struggling with the technical aspects of creating and distributing modules for Foundry and I’d like to be able to bring to the artist/creator community the same sort of convenience that I was able to bring to the users of Foundry.

I’d also like to spend a bit more time on Beyond20, maybe add some new amazing feature that will blow everyone’s mind! I’ve kept maintaining Beyond20 (shout out to Aeristoka, who has done a lot of the heavy lifting) and we’ve had some nice features recently, like the hotkeys support, but I feel like there is so much potential there. I have a few ideas that get me excited, but I don’t want to say anything just yet….

Let's learn how to do some cool stuff in Foundry! Let's make a landing page. Note: This is not an exhaustive step-by-step walkthrough. It should get you pointed in the right direction though.

An interactive landing page provides players with an immersion building starting point for entering the doorway to your world. Foundry enables us to build beautiful and fully interactive scenes which can provide players a ‘home base’ scene to start from. With the right modules and some creative thinking, we can also create a space where players can access a great deal of information in fun and exciting ways. Let’s take a look at some examples and see how it can be done.

Editor’s Note

Our first scene is brought to us courtesy of Todori. Todori runs a Pathfinder game, but this kind of page will work with any system compatible with the required modules.

Beautiful and functional! Original art template courtesy of Reddit user u/FlereousM, who scoured the interwebs for the art and arranged it here.

The key to making this landing page truly interactive, is the use of a few modules.

Trigger Happy for clicking on things to activate other things

Forien’s Quest Log for the quest log system

Inline Web Viewer for accessing an interactive website through journals

LootSheetNPC5e for the loot chest if you’re in 5e. It’s available for other systems like Pathfinder2E and 3.5e as well.

Trigger Happy is a powerful module, and if you are not familiar with how to use it, we recommend you start here. Here is a sample of Toldori’s landing page triggers for the Trigger Happy module:

// Click to change the scene
@Token[AndoranMap] @Trigger[click] @Scene[Andoran]

// Click to open character sheet
@Token[YorikCard] @Trigger[click] @Actor[Yorik]
@Token[PartyLoot] @Trigger[click] @Actor[Party's Loot Chest]

// Click to call macro that opens up Forien's Quest Log
@Token[LandingBook] @Trigger[click] @Macro[QuestLog]

// Click to open up journal
@Token[InnerSea] @Trigger[click] @JournalEntry[httpspathfinderwikicom]

// The macro used to open up Forien's Quest Log

QuestLog.render(true);

The key to the creation of triggers is to use the module’s ‘transparent token’ to cover the area of an image you wish to trigger with, then make sure that you toggle the token to be “Invisible” to the players. Combining this with using the “@Trigger[click]” inside the journal entry will create an illusion for your players that they are interacting with things placed on the scene. The transparent token, macros and a helpful README will appear in your compendium after activating the module. Follow the provided instructions (and check youtube for additional helpful videos) and you will be activating things in no time!

Huge thanks to Todori for sharing this fantastic landing page!

Editor’s Note

Our second showcase comes to us courtesy of Cystere.Orling, who uses some animation along with teleporting to turn their landing page into a launching point scenes players can navigate to on their own. A big shout out to Cystere.Orling for sharing their idea!

Inspired by u/DragonbeardNick from the following Reddit post

This landing page makes use of two modules.

Parallaxia for the scrolling player images. Additional information on how to use this module can be found here.

Multilevel Tokens for the teleportation effect. This module also has a great deal of possible uses. Start here.

Cystere.Orling says: I got the scrolling image idea from this post by u/DragonbeardNick and when I asked him how he had the images cycling through what appeared to be an image wider than the screen, he said that it was one long image. For the scrolling I created a tile that was the height of the image I used (using photopea to simply put five separate player images onto one wide image) and the width of the poster. I used the very long image of five as the “fill” image for the tile so when I placed it, it appeared stretched to fit. Then when I selected the tile and activated parallaxia, the image became its actual size and only showed what is currently in view (or in frame), so it appears that it is cycling through.

Check out the modules, pull together some fantastic art, and start creating! See what you can build and post your results in the forum for everyone to see!

Isometric maps and tokens take a traditional ‘top-down’ viewpoint and change it to a ‘three-dimensional’ offset view, creating a fantastic and nuanced perspective, as seen here:

This viewpoint brings a whole new dimension (pun intended) of possibilities into your Foundry VTT games. Map courtesy of Isometric Worlds

Let’s talk with Grape_Juice and see what we can learn!

FHub: What’s your history with RPG’s and VTTs?

GJ: Oh wow, that takes me back to many old school games we all used to play, their distinctive feature was the unique and memorable art in the UI, and of course, isometric view. Games like Fallout, BG and Diablo to name a few. Most of these I played when I was much younger, and I think that’s what set that concept of RPG’s and fantasy for me.

My story with VTT’s started like everybody’s I assume. I used to play with a group of random people I met on the internet on Roll20 and used to DM and play on a table as well. When Covid hit, we tried using Roll20 exclusively, but I really had issues running games and felt there had to be a better way. Long story short I saw Foundry and fell in love.

FHub: What got you into programming with Foundry?

GJ: That’s a funny story. I had a ‘potato’ computer and was running Dungeon of the Mad Mage (DotMM) in its full HUGE map’s glory. I loved the dynamic lighting of Foundry but the performance took a huge hit when running 5,000+ walls and lights. I didn’t want to go back to Roll20 and suddenly developed a burning interest in trying to understand why it worked so slowly (moving a token took around 7 seconds and so did opening doors). I dove into the code for running performance monitoring, which led me into the wall and ray-tracing calculations. I thought of an idea to solve the issue and it worked! It took a couple of sleepless nights of tinkering with Foundry and getting to know Javascript, but that increased the application’s performance and I was ecstatic.

When I saw a lot of people had the same issue, I decided to turn my patches into a module and so the notorious “Haste” module was born1. From there helping people out and creating things that brought joy, mixed with a love for RPG’s really set a fire under me. I created my second module, the MiniMap, which also felt like something I needed to run DotMM, and of course, what old school RPG doesn’t have a cool minimap?

1Editor’s Note: Haste has been deprecated in Foundry Core .7x and newer

Once that was out there, I wanted to bring more people to Foundry, and after seeing how many were on the fence due to their sunken cost in Fantasy Grounds, I decided to pick up the mantle and create the FG_Converter. It took a bit of time to get a working version, but I saw I could really make an impact and help a lot of people move to Foundry. This was a turning point for me since I got enjoyment from making something for other people and not just something for myself.

The Foundry community is something I fell in love with. So many helpful and supportive people, the joys of hacking away at Foundry, and the feeling of making an impact are the things that charmed me.

FHub: Programming modules seems daunting to many of us, but lots of people try their hand at it. Programming for isometric play seems downright unimaginable. How difficult are the problems posed by this type of programming?

GJ: The major issue I had is no other VTT I know of tried to tackle the problem. It felt like uncharted territory. Sure there are many isometric games, and even 3D games, but a VTT? Isometric play must make it easy for a GM to build scenes and for players to play in them. At the same time, it must still work with all the other features the VTT has to offer, such as dynamic lighting and measurement tools, and even use the same tokens and assets.

On one side you have the isometric requirements, on another the player’s experience, a third is the GM’s view, and finally, you have the complexity of trying to adapt a VTT that was not designed with isometric in mind.

The difficulties were mostly related to figuring out matrix transformations, patching parts of Foundry to work in different ways, figuring out how to make rooms work when viewed from inside or outside, some shader work, a sprinkle of geometric algebra, and performance.

The latest feature I added provides an example of what kinds of things need to be done in order to work in isometric view: When playing top-down, most tiles are never going to be placed on top of one another. In the isometric view, tiles are going to be placed and stacked together, whether it’s a room, a hallway with walls, or a door in a door frame. Building scenes is a difficult task because each tile has a ‘bounding box’ around it, which works great for a top-down view, but increases the difficulty of selecting the tile in isometric view. After reviewing feedback from the community, I added a “pixel perfect” hit-area for each tile, which means that the selection of tiles will happen based on which tile appears under the cursor, taking into account transparent areas.

‘Pixel-Perfect’. Map courtesy of Isometric Worlds.

FHub: Why Isometric? What intrigued you about this style of play?

GJ: After I made a few modules and saw that a lot of people liked what I did, I started making things that I thought people wanted and that would be fun and challenging to create, rather than make what I needed for my own games. I wanted to create a random dungeon generator which had both top-down and isometric modes. I built the code for the top-down and suddenly realized making it work in isometric was going to be hard, and there wasn’t an easy way to play in isometric in the first place. Then it hit me, I had to figure out a way to make isometric work in Foundry. Suddenly all those old school games came to mind and I saw some beautiful art in isometric style that captivated me. It made so much more sense than top-down perspective and the problem was difficult and interesting.

I find isometric style to be the perfect middle ground between 3D VTT’s such as Tabletop Simulator (which is hard to create scenes for and you can’t use 2D art) and top-down perspective, which lacks some visual information you want to give to players. It looks beautiful and unique, stands out, and brings back a lot of nostalgia.

FHub: What’s the future of isometric and Foundry? Where do you see it going?

GJ: I want to see isometric view treated as a first-class citizen in VTT’s. I have a lot of features I am working on adding as well. Outline silhouettes allowing you to see tokens behind objects, multiple facing tokens that change based on movement direction, and token changes based on status effects (prone, hiding, flying, etc.) to name a few. I believe as it becomes easier to play in isometric, more artists will create art for it, which is the other issue that holds the whole isometric movement back. I also hope to bring more collaborations with artists to put out map packs that have all the isometric features built-in.

Finally, once everything is working well and Foundry has stabilized a bit more, I can let the module out of early access for everyone to use and enjoy for free!

FHub: You have several other modules and a few projects in the works, what can you tell us about those?

GJ: I am extremely excited about “Material Dice”, my next project. It’s a bit ambitious, but I want people to use their real dice when using a VTT! The twist is that it’s going to work automatically.

The idea is this: you can place your phone above your dice tray/table, click a roll in Foundry for an attack or a save and a window will pop out telling you which dice you need to throw onto the dice tray. Once you roll, some AI magic happens and in less than a second, those dice results are used as if Foundry rolled them for you.

I have been training some AI models on around 15,000 images of dice, and a lot of them are from people on my discord. Now you have a use for all the cool dice you bought before COVID!!

Posted on February 2, 2021

Goin’ Virtual

I was hesitant for a long time to try the virtual tabletop experience – it just felt like it couldn’t compete with having a group gather around a table in person. I wanted to actually participate in some games as a player, though, not just as a GM to the limited audience of just my immediate family- but COVID made that difficult without going online.

I ended up playing in a D&D campaign and a series of short Mighty Protectors ones on Roll20, both of which are still ongoing. While I was correct in my assessment that it’s just not the same as in-person play, it did turn out to be decidedly non-horrible! There’s something to be said for being able to join up with players from all over the world without having to leave the house. Another, unexpected advantage I discovered, is that it’s a lot easier to get even the local folks to show up regularly if there’s no travel and they can just roll into bed after the session ends.

There’s been a campaign setting idea bouncing around in my head for a year or so, and a couple of old friends have pestered me to start up a regular game ever since they heard I’d gotten back into the hobby. In December, I decided to give in to both urges.

What follows is a very-much-not-exhaustive overview of the systems I considered in trying to make this happen and which one I ultimately decided on.

To Roll20 or not to Roll20?

The obvious choice was to just jump into Roll20 since I was familiar with it as a player and had spent some time watching videos about setting up games there. It’s a highly viable option with a lot of support and a lot of users, with at least rudimentary options for playing nearly any RPG I might choose to run.

But I’d experienced enough performance issues on days when their servers were busy that I wanted to investigate other options. Add to that the fact that a lot of features I would want to use would require a paid subscription – including taking advantage of any of the wide array of plug-ins developed by the community.

(I already had a paid subscription because I was working on overhauling the existing Mighty Protectors character sheet there, and they charge would-be developers for the privilege of enhancing their site for them. This, and the cumbersome nature of the development process under their system, was a further turn-off.)

So I started looking into other options. There are a number of simple map-sharing packages, but I wanted something more complete than that – the ability to host character sheets, set up click-to-roll actions, etc., at the very least.

Fantasy, Grounded

The second VTT I looked into was Fantasy Grounds, which has been around for quite some time but received a major overhaul in 2020 with its “Unity” release.

I fully admit I didn’t really spend as much time researching this one as it might deserve and I didn’t actively try it out beyond maybe a dozen or so clicks in the online demo. My understanding is that the big strengths of FG are its ability to automate almost any in-game process and its large collection of user-created scripts to do so.

The thing is, though, that there’s only so much I would want to automate. I’m not sure at what point the virtualization of a pen-and-paper RPG turns it into a video game, but it’s not a line I want to cross. On top of that, if I’m running a game I want players to actually learn and understand the underlying system, not memorize what buttons to click to fire off some process. To me, firing attack and save rolls off from a character sheet is fine, for instance, but having the system manage the PCs’ hit points for them goes too far. Not that FG would force this, by any means, but I wouldn’t really be playing to its strengths.

Its user interface, even in the new version, has a reputation for being confusing and difficult to work with. Instructional videos on setting up games confirmed this in my mind. It’s not horrible, but seems like it could have been better thought out.

The list of supported (official and user-created) games is smaller than Roll20’s, and there’s no free option at all beyond the demo. You either spend $149 a year for the “Ultimate” subscription so you can host games and invite non-paid players, or choose the $30 option where your players also all have to pay the same.

Editor’s Note: The editorial team would like to issue a correction in that the price point of $149 is a one off purchase, and not an annual subscription.

So… kind of a non-starter for me. Lots of folks who use it love it, but I just didn’t see it offering significant benefit to me even leaving the price point aside.

I Foundry what I was looking for

Foundry VTT is a new entry in this market, released in 2020. It’s competing against two reigning juggernauts, but it seems to have an enthusiastic and growing community. Foundry takes a different approach to the virtual tabletop paradigm in a number of important ways:

There are no subscriptions. You buy a software license for a one-time $50 fee (I actually got it on a Black Friday sale for less) and you have access to all its features forever. All the lighting and sound features, all the community-created plug-ins, all the game systems, the ability to create custom compendiums, everything – up to and including the ability to build plug-ins and game systems yourself, should you be so inclined. (There’s a 30 day window for a refund, should you make the purchase but decide not to use the software. Also note that there are for-sale third party add-ons that are not free.)

The base software is self-hosted – meaning it runs on your own PC. I’m lucky enough to have a relatively fast and stable internet connection, and Foundry’s performance for my players has thus far been significantly smoother than my normal Roll20 experience. There are a number of options for external hosting as well, ranging from “free or very cheap but complicated to set up” – Amazon Web Services – to “pretty much point and click and still comes out cheaper than the paid options on those other services unless you splurge for the mega packages”. (I’m probably going to blow any savings I might have made in switching from R20 on the purchase of a recent-model Raspberry Pi to host my games in the future, but that’s not at all necessary and entirely because I have trouble resisting the lure of a shiny new gadget.)

I frankly don’t have enough experience with the nuances of all three systems from a GM perspective to be able to do a fair direct comparison. Their feature lists have more in common than not, though the details vary.

Instead, I can point out some of the aspects of Foundry that I like, which contributed to my choosing it over the other options.

Of the three choices, I prefer its user interface. There’s nothing magical about it, but for the most part it feels better organized to me.

I don’t like the way it does everything by default (I’m looking at you, 5e dice rolling without the “Better Rolls” plugin!) and there are features I’d like to see added or expanded… but in almost every case I was able to find something among the community created mods that granted me the capability I wanted.

Did I mention it performs well?

I’ve played a bit with setting up (subscription-only) dynamic lighting in Roll20 and have found Foundry’s (no extra cost) implementation much better, allowing for open-able and close-able doors and windows as well as sight blocking features that don’t stop tokens from being moved through them – such as bushes and trees.

One of my favorite features is the ability to add sounds to a map and have the volume scale up as characters approach the point it emanates from. For instance, a small underground waterfall might not be heard from the cave entrance, but as the party delves inward they start to hear the sound of running water. Scenes can have their own playlists attached, and the GM can set up libraries of sounds to play with a click. Gnolls are a problem in the low-level area of my new campaign, and the players have learned to expect something’s about to go down when I play the sounds of yipping hyenas…

Casting area effect spells can automatically pop up a place-able template for the area they’re supposed to cover.

Yesterday I discovered that for a druid character I could set up a list of potential Wild Shape forms that they have read-only access to; now the player can drag and drop an animal onto her character sheet and it will pop up a selection screen with “Wild Shape” as an option – clicking that will transform her character sheet to show the physical properties of the animal with her INT/WIS/CHA/etc, along with converting her token to show the new shape. An “undo transform” option on the character sheet then turns everything back to normal!

There’s a great set of tutorial videos at a YouTube channel called Encounter Library. In particular, their “Foundry VTT Basics” playlist was very useful not only when starting to get my campaign set up, but in selling me on the idea of trying the product out.

There are, of course, trade-offs.

As a relatively new system, it doesn’t yet support a library of games as large as Roll20 does…but thanks to community efforts, the list is already long and growing quickly. It also doesn’t yet have a large library of ready-made content, although this is changing as well both through official support from game makers (Savage Worlds and Warhammer Fantasy as of this writing) and through user-created adventures, etc.

For D&D players, there are compendiums included that cover everything that’s part of the public 5th Edition SRD – as is true of Roll20 and FG. Those systems allow you to purchase the other Wizards of the Coast material in digital form to add those compendiums as well. Foundry doesn’t have this capability in a direct way, but there’s a (user-created) solution that in many ways is better because it’s not directly tied to Foundry: if you use D&D Beyond and purchase any of the WOTC rule books, adventures, etc., for sale there, those can be imported and cleanly integrated into Foundry. If you’re like me and refuse to pay WOTC hundreds of dollars more for books you’ve already bought in hardcover, it’s relatively easy to add in non-SRD items on an as-needed basis.

Pathfinder 2nd Edition is also well supported for the PF players out there. Sadly, Mighty Protectors is not yet one of the systems Foundry directly supports – but the development process looks much more straightforward than Roll20’s did, so I’m hoping to try my hand at it myself.

It’s still being actively developed and enhancements and fixes are relatively frequent. Overall this is a good thing, but it raises the possibility that something your game (or your favorite plug-in) depends on might change. It doesn’t force you to update, though, so it’s easy enough to wait a week or so after each new version to make sure any plug-in incompatibilities get addressed.

There may be technical challenges to setting it up because of the need to grant your players access it on your home network. For the base PC-hosted install the steps to do this are usually simple with easy-to-follow instructions, but might still be daunting to some.

Similarly, if your internet connection is slow or unreliable, you’re going to have to use an external host or choose a different option.

There’s just one guy who’s the owner and sole developer of the base product. He’s enthusiastic and does it full time, but if anything happens to him, the future of Foundry becomes questionable.

It doesn’t yet have the vast library of commercial supporting material such as the token packs, custom adventures, map packs, etc. that can be purchased through and for the Big Two. Not a huge consideration for me but it might be for some… and it’s changing as more people adopt FVTT.

So, in summary… yeah, I kind of really like Foundry at this point.
